The ‘dusting’ challenge, a dangerous social media trend involving the inhalation of household cleaners, has claimed the life of 19-year-old Renna O’Rourke from Arizona. Renna’s father reported that her boyfriend obtained an aerosol keyboard cleaner, which she then inhaled, leading to cardiac arrest. Despite medical efforts, she was declared brain dead after being in the ICU for four days. The ‘dusting’ trend, also referred to as ‘huffing’ or ‘chroming,’ is known for its potential to cause heart failure and other serious health complications. Renna’s mother emphasized the ease with which children can access these substances and the devastating consequences that can result. The family is now actively working to raise awareness about the deadly nature of ‘dusting,’ advocating for parental vigilance and support. In a related incident, a boy in the UK died in March 2024 after inhaling toxic substances.
