This move signals the end of the diplomatic dispute sparked by the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The leaders acknowledged the importance of their diplomatic relationship, aiming to improve their ties.
The outcome of their talks included a mutual agreement to appoint new high commissioners. Carney described the discussions as a foundational step towards rebuilding the relationship, emphasizing the importance of an open exchange of views to create a basis of mutual respect, sovereignty, and trust.
The leaders also addressed the strong historical bonds between the two countries, along with potential partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, economic growth, and supply chains. Carney mentioned PM Modi’s continuous attendance at G7 Summits since 2018, recognizing India’s significant role in the global economy. The Canadian PM anticipates India’s continued participation at the next G7 in France.
