A distressing case has come to light in Bihar where a minor girl was forced into marriage by her parents to clear their debts. The girl, approximately 16 and a half years old, was married to a man twice her age, 33. The marriage was followed by instances of abuse and the obstruction of her education. The girl sought help and, along with a friend, escaped from the situation. She subsequently filed a plea in the Supreme Court, requesting that her marriage be annulled.
The Supreme Court has responded by issuing notices to the Bihar government and Delhi Police, seeking updates on the situation. The court has also instructed the top police officials in Bihar and Delhi to guarantee the safety of the girl and her companion. The girl’s petition specifically states that she was married against her will to a 33-year-old individual, while she wished to pursue her education. Furthermore, the petition highlights allegations of physical and mental abuse suffered at the hands of her husband and in-laws.
