The Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly today saw a strong reaction to the actions of the sand mafia and illegal sand mining. The opposition attempted to initiate a discussion via an adjournment motion, but Speaker Dr. Raman Singh did not allow it. Following this decision, Congress members chose to walk out in protest.
During zero hour, prominent Congress members, including Dr. Charandas Mahant, Bhupesh Baghel, Dwarkadhish Yadav, and Umesh Patel, raised the issue through an adjournment motion. They accused the sand mafia, allegedly backed by the government, of conducting illegal mining and assaulting villagers who resist. They further claimed that despite filing complaints, no action had been taken against the mafia due to the protection they receive from those in authority. The opposition emphasized that the situation in Chhattisgarh was becoming similar to that in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and requested a discussion on this vital issue. The Speaker, after listening to the opposition, rejected the motion, stating that a discussion was not possible because the matter had already been raised in a ‘Dhyanakarshan’. The opposition members then protested and walked out of the House to show their dissatisfaction.
