In a significant development, Members of Parliament have submitted a memorandum to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, to initiate the removal process for High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma. This action is a direct response to the cash discovery controversy. The impeachment motion, signed by 145 Lok Sabha members, is based on Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution. The cross-party support for the motion includes MPs from Congress, TDP, JDU, JDS, Jan Sena Party, AGP, SS (Shinde), LJSP, SKP, and CPM. Prominent MPs such as Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule, and KC Venugopal have also signed the memorandum. The context for this move is the alleged discovery of damaged currency notes at Justice Varma’s official residence in March 2025, which is now under parliamentary scrutiny. A judicial committee had previously indicted Justice Varma and recommended his removal, a decision that Justice Varma contested in the Supreme Court.
