A motion seeking to impeach Justice Yashwant Varma has been formally introduced, with 145 members of the Lok Sabha supporting the move. The impeachment process, based on Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution, was triggered by a memorandum submitted to the Lok Sabha Speaker. The motion reflects cross-party support, with participation from parties like the Congress, TDP, and others, including prominent figures such as Ravi Shankar Prasad and Supriya Sule.
Simultaneously, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar, has also confirmed receiving a motion for the impeachment of Justice Varma, backed by 50 Rajya Sabha members. This development follows an internal inquiry related to the discovery of cash at the judge’s residence after a fire. Dhankhar affirmed that this motion meets the procedural criteria necessary to start the removal process. He sought clarification from the Law Minister on the presence of a similar motion in the Lok Sabha. Justice Varma has challenged the committee’s findings in the Supreme Court, claiming inadequate opportunity for response. The motion comes just as the Parliament’s monsoon session began, and it stems from the incident at his residence where cash was allegedly found.
