
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated a commemorative coin during his visit to Tamil Nadu to celebrate the birth anniversary of Chola emperor Rajendra Chola I. This event was in response to a request by R. Komagan, Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust. A roadshow was also held by Modi in Tiruchirappalli.
During a speech in Tiruchirappalli, PM Modi praised the Chola Empire as a glorious period in Indian history, highlighting its democratic roots. He pointed out the early presence of elections within the Chola Empire, predating the Magna Carta. The Prime Minister also emphasized the Chola kings’ strong diplomatic and trade links with Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Southeast Asia. He noted the coincidence of his return from the Maldives and the opportunity to participate in the event.
Modi highlighted the act of bringing Gangajal from Kashi and related it to the legacy of the Chola kings. He connected the event with the ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative, highlighting the energy it provides. Moreover, Modi expressed his admiration for the land’s spiritual heritage and his personal connection as a representative from Kashi.
