The efforts of US President Donald Trump to secure a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand were immediately undermined by renewed fighting and mutual accusations of aggression. Despite Trump’s reported success in convincing both sides to engage in peace talks, artillery attacks erupted hours later. The violence marked the most severe clashes in over ten years, leading to a death toll exceeding 30, and causing mass evacuations. Cambodia expressed support for Trump’s ceasefire call. Thailand, however, expressed reservations, stating talks could not begin while Cambodia was allegedly targeting Thai civilians. Despite plans to discuss a ceasefire, artillery fire was exchanged on Sunday morning, with both nations assigning blame. Cambodia accused Thailand of initiating shelling and ground assaults, including targeting of historical sites. The Thai army countered by alleging Cambodian forces fired upon civilian areas and deployed long-range rocket launchers. Decades-long disputes concerning the undemarcated border and ownership of temples continue to fuel tensions.
