Reliance Jio has unveiled JioPC, a cloud-based virtual desktop service that allows users to utilize their TVs as computers. This innovative solution utilizes the Jio Set-Top Box, connecting to JioFiber, thereby eliminating the need for a separate CPU. The service is available for individual purchase.
JioPC operates by connecting a keyboard and mouse to the TV, creating a virtual computer environment. Built on the Ubuntu (Linux) operating system, the service is entirely cloud-based. Users can browse the web, engage in online education, code, and edit documents. However, support for external devices like webcams and printers is currently unavailable.
The pricing structure is based on a pay-as-you-go model. The monthly plan starts at ₹599 + GST. The three-month plan includes a one-month free subscription, costing ₹1,499. The yearly plan gives an additional three months of service, resulting in 15 months of usage, for ₹4,599.
Each virtual machine is equipped with 4 CPUs, 8GB RAM, and 100GB of cloud storage. Pre-installed software includes LibreOffice, and Microsoft Office can be accessed through a web browser. A complimentary one-month trial is offered, including Jio Workspace and 512GB of extra cloud storage, along with free access to Adobe Express for graphics design and content creation.
To set up, activate the Jio Set-Top Box, access the JioPC app within the Apps section, and register using your mobile number. Upon logging in, the cloud desktop is ready to use. High-speed internet is essential for optimal function, as all processing is done on Jio’s cloud servers.
