Former US President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on India, effective August 1, 2025, plus an undisclosed penalty. Trump’s announcement on Truth Social accused India of having “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers” and of being a major purchaser of Russian military equipment and energy. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry responded by stating it is examining the implications of the tariffs and will take all necessary steps to protect the nation’s interests. The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to a balanced trade agreement. Following the announcement, Trump indicated a willingness to negotiate with India.
