In the final moments, Messi’s pass to Marcelo Weigandt led to a late goal in the 96th minute. After a VAR review, the goal was confirmed, securing the win for Inter Miami.
Messi earlier set up Telasco Segovia in the 58th minute, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. Segovia’s finish eased the pressure on Miami.
Atlas equalized in the 82nd minute through Rivaldo Lozano, but Messi’s last-minute assist saved the day for Inter Miami.
This performance capped off a stellar July for Messi, who scored eight goals and provided five assists, earning him the MLS Player of the Month award. Inter Miami had a 4-1-1 record during the month.
The first half was a tight, physical affair with no goals. Rocco Ríos Novo, Inter Miami’s goalkeeper, made important saves. Luis Suárez nearly scored before halftime.
