A cyber fraud involving SIM boxes has been exposed in Bihar. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) seized four SIM boxes in Narayanpur village, Bhojpur district, and arrested Mukesh Kumar. The raid, led by DSP Pankaj Kumar, also uncovered a laptop and internet router. The investigation is ongoing to identify additional individuals connected to the scheme. It is suspected that the SIM boxes were used to reroute international calls to appear as local calls, enabling the cybercriminals to carry out fraudulent activities. Thousands of fraudulent calls were reportedly made each day, contributing to significant losses for the central telecom ministry. The investigation has also identified suspected collusion between telecom service providers’ distributors and retailers, who allegedly misused biometric data to obtain SIM cards for fraudulent activities. This operation is linked to a previous bust in Motihari where three SIM boxes were seized.
