A new bill passed by the Delhi Assembly seeks to regulate private school fees and prevent arbitrary increases. The Delhi School Education Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees Bill 2025, is a key initiative by the BJP government in Delhi. Education Minister Ashish Sood highlighted that the bill aims to end the exploitation of parents and prevent practices like detaining children due to fee issues. The legislation addresses concerns related to school fees and ensures greater transparency in financial practices.
The bill mandates schools to present information on location, facilities, expenses, and teaching standards when proposing fee adjustments. Schools will face fines for unauthorized fee hikes, ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh. Repeated violations may lead to the cancellation of recognition and, if necessary, government operation of the school. A three-tiered regulatory system will be established, including committees at the school, district, and state levels, involving parents, teachers, principals, and officials. The bill grants parents a veto on fee hikes based on the audit rules.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasized that the bill would foster transparency, justice, and accountability, building public trust in the education system and curbing arbitrary practices.
