On Sunday, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck Balikesir province in northwestern Turkey. The quake’s epicenter was located in Sındırgı, and its impact was felt in Istanbul, a city with a large population, located about 200 kilometers away. Following the main shock, several aftershocks occurred. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency has initiated response efforts and urged people to avoid damaged buildings. Reports from local sources indicate that a building in Sındırgı collapsed due to the earthquake. Turkey’s geographical position makes it prone to seismic events.
