As anticipation builds for Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’, which is expected to set new box office records and features Aamir Khan, it’s interesting to remember the impact of the original ‘Coolie’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor. Released 42 years ago, this film was a major success.
Manmohan Desai directed the 1983 film ‘Coolie’, where Amitabh Bachchan played a porter. The film’s soundtrack, particularly the song ‘Sari Duniya Ka Bojh Hum Uthate Hain’, was a massive hit.
‘Coolie’ (1983) had a budget of 3.5 crore rupees, but earned a remarkable 21 crore rupees, making it a six-fold profit. The film was the highest-grossing film of that year. The movie also featured Rishi Kapoor alongside Amitabh Bachchan in the leading roles. Rati Agnihotri and Waheeda Rehman also played key roles, alongside actors such as Shoma Anand, Amrish Puri, and Kader Khan.
Now, the new film, also titled ‘Coolie’ and starring Rajinikanth, is set to release on August 14, 2025, with Nagarjuna as the antagonist and Aamir Khan in a special appearance. Aamir Khan is reported to have waived his fee for his role in the film.
