
The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, will now also take on the responsibilities of Governor of Nagaland. This follows the death of La Ganesan, who previously held the position. La Ganesan, aged 80, died in a private hospital in Chennai on August 16th.
The government announced that, due to the passing of La Ganesan, the President has entrusted Ajay Kumar Bhalla, the Governor of Manipur, with the duties of the Governor of Nagaland, in addition to his current obligations.
Ajay Kumar Bhalla, a retired IAS officer, was appointed as the Governor of Manipur by President Droupadi Murmu. Bhalla, who retired from the IAS in 1984, was appointed as the Union Home Secretary on August 22, 2019. He served as India’s Home Secretary for approximately five years, until August 22, 2024.
After the death of Governor La Ganesan, a seven-day period of mourning has been declared in Nagaland, from August 16th to August 22nd. The state government has declared that the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all state buildings during this time. Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio stated that La Ganesan’s contributions would continue to inspire future generations and remembered his efforts to strengthen unity and development in Nagaland.
La Ganesan, who was made the 19th Governor of Nagaland in 2023, had previously served as Governor of Manipur and West Bengal (additional charge). La Ganesan suffered a serious head injury after a fall at his home in T. Nagar, Chennai, on August 8th. He was hospitalized in a private hospital in Chennai, but his condition did not improve, and he passed away.
