Ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, the Indian selection committee is expected to meet on August 19 to finalize the squad. Unexpected developments may see some prominent players, including Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj, missing out despite their recent performances. Shreyas Iyer’s position is also uncertain. The selection committee is considering options between Shreyas Iyer, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, and Rinku Singh. Mohammed Siraj, the leading wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, is likely to be overlooked in favor of Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, or Prasidh Krishna. Shreyas Iyer’s recent captaincy stint with Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, where he led them to the final and scored 604 runs, is being reviewed. His last T20 appearance for India was in December 2023. The selection panel is also debating how to fit Shubman Gill into the team, with discussions involving potential changes to the opening or middle-order batting positions. The existing opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are favored, and the idea of replacing Tilak Varma was rejected. The prospect of replacing Gill with Yashasvi Jaiswal was also turned down, with the selectors wanting to keep the left-hander.
