The passage of the Online Gaming Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha has ignited concerns about the future of platforms like the Mobile Premier League (MPL). The bill directly targets online games that involve financial transactions, encompassing a range of games including card games, fantasy leagues, and betting platforms. Because MPL facilitates cash-reward contests, it is directly impacted by the new law. The bill places a blanket ban on all forms of real-money gaming. This legislation’s potential ramifications include a possible ban on fantasy sports, akin to the impact on Dream11. The future of arcade-style games on the platform depends on removing cash rewards and switching to subscription-based models. The ability of MPL to generate revenue could be severely restricted if it fails to pivot towards esports and social gaming. However, the bill allows esports tournaments and casual games not involving real-money wagering to continue, provided the company shifts away from financial gambling. MPL must now assess whether to overhaul its business model or face potential shutdowns. Introduced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the bill aims to promote online social games and esports.
