Before the announcement of the Bihar Assembly elections, the BJP is expected to appoint a new national president. There are various reasons for the delay in selecting the new national president, and a significant one is the extensive deliberation by the RSS regarding the appointment. According to sources, with the monsoon session of Parliament now concluded, the process for electing the new national president will be expedited. The RSS has undertaken an extensive process to gather opinions on the selection of the BJP’s new national president.
The BJP is an affiliated organization of the RSS. The RSS, much like in the selection of leaders for other affiliated organizations, has a significant role in the selection of the BJP’s leader. The RSS has reached out to approximately 88 senior leaders to solicit suggestions for the new national president, seeking their preferences regarding the name.
Sources indicate that former BJP presidents, senior central ministers, and leaders linked to the RSS and BJP who have held constitutional positions have been consulted, and their suggestions have been considered.
* The Sangh has individually met with these 88 senior leaders to get their recommendations regarding the new BJP president.
* Sources reveal that while several senior leaders suggested names, some stated they would agree with any chosen name.
* A former BJP national president who currently holds the second-highest constitutional position suggested a Union minister who has also served as a Chief Minister.
* A former national president closely connected to the Sangh, currently a Union Minister, has clearly conveyed to the RSS that they have never and will not provide suggestions or advice, and the Sangh’s opinion is their final word.
* A Union Minister who has served as a Chief Minister, mentioned their age, and indicated that they were not prepared to take on the role of party president but would consider it if there was consensus.
* A Union Minister, who was also the state president of a South Indian state, stated they did not consider themselves capable of taking on the responsibility.
* A common suggestion from the Sangh’s survey was that the new national president should be around 60 years old.
### National President Election to Follow
The election for Vice President is scheduled for September 9. The BJP is currently focused on ensuring the NDA candidate receives the maximum votes. Reports suggest that elections for state presidents in important states like UP, Karnataka, and Gujarat may be held soon. Following this, the national president will be elected.
The level of consultation for the new national president mirrored the process used for state and district presidents. The BJP aimed for a consensus-based election to promote organizational stability. Similarly, the BJP decided to give opportunities to youth in the election of mandal presidents, aiming to ensure the new mandal president is under forty years old.
The result was the BJP provided opportunities to youth in most of the roughly 15,000 mandals across the country. Moreover, the elections for district and state presidents ensured candidates had been active BJP members for at least ten years. This decision was based on recent lessons learned by the BJP after noticing discontent among BJP workers when leaders from other parties were given key organizational positions. There were, however, some exceptions to this.
