Selection concerns surround Indian wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. His participation in the Kerala Cricket League, playing for the Kochi Blue Tigers, has only intensified the discussion. Samson batted at number five, a significant departure from his usual place in the top order. This strategic move has ignited speculation regarding his chances in the national team. The decision to utilize Vinoop Manoharan and Jobin Joby in the top batting positions, might signify Samson’s willingness to play in the middle order, possibly as a trial run for the Asia Cup. With Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav expected to bat at number three and four, and Abhishek Sharma opening, Samson’s role requires some adjustment. The inclusion of vice-captain Shubman Gill, who recently had a successful tour of England, raises further questions about the batting order. With Gill’s place virtually secured, and his typical batting position at number three, Samson faces the prospect of demotion or exclusion from the playing eleven. Ravichandran Ashwin, the experienced spinner, has indicated that Samson’s inclusion in the playing eleven might be ‘in a bit of danger,’ given the current team composition. Selectors are expected to closely assess Samson’s adaptability and form as they prepare for the Asia Cup.
