Khalid Jamil, the newly appointed head coach of the Indian national football team, has revealed the 23-member squad for the upcoming CAFA Nations Cup. The tournament, beginning August 29 in Tajikistan, marks a significant step in a new era for Indian football. However, the exclusion of star striker Sunil Chhetri has sent shockwaves through the fanbase.
Jamil, who officially took over the reins earlier this month, has made a bold statement by omitting Chhetri, India’s most celebrated footballer, from his initial squad selection. Chhetri, renowned for his exceptional attacking skills and leadership qualities, has been a pivotal figure in Indian football for many years. His absence indicates a shift towards a more youthful and dynamic approach.
The preparatory camp commenced on August 1, featuring 29 players. The final squad was selected after some players were unavailable for selection. Despite these challenges, Jamil has expressed his confidence in the selected team, which blends experience with promising young talent. Key players include Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Sandesh Jhingan, alongside emerging stars like Irfan Yadwad and Vikram Partap Singh.
While no specific reason has been given for Chhetri’s absence, several considerations may have influenced Jamil’s decision. Building a squad for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and beyond could be a priority. Additionally, the management might have opted to rest the veteran forward after a demanding season. Tactical considerations, with Jamil’s high-intensity approach potentially favoring younger, more energetic forwards, may also have played a role.
India will compete against Tajikistan, Iran, and Afghanistan in the group stage of the CAFA Nations Cup. The top two teams will advance to the play-offs, with the final scheduled for September 8 in Tashkent.
For Indian football fans, the CAFA Nations Cup would have been an opportunity to witness Chhetri’s leadership one of the final times. His omission not only represents a tactical shift but also highlights the inevitable transition to a post-Chhetri era.
As Jamil begins his tenure, the focus will be on how this squad performs. While Chhetri’s international future remains uncertain, this decision signifies that Indian football is looking towards the future.
