The US Embassy in Dhaka is facing a serious terror threat, according to intelligence reports. The planned attack included targeting embassy staff and a religious figure. The security forces were able to prevent the attack and arrest Shamin Mahfuz of Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya. The plot involved reconnaissance by terrorists affiliated with Jama’atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya and Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). Following the revelation of the threat, the US initiated discussions with the Bangladeshi government. The meetings covered security cooperation, counter-terrorism efforts, law enforcement, and online safety for women.
Shamin Mahfuz was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-11). He has previous arrests for terrorist activities and is now accused of having links with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Others were arrested and charged with training in Afghanistan and Pakistan for jihadist activities.
The US Embassy in Dhaka is planning a special force with the Bangladesh police, under the SPEAR program, to enhance security during emergencies.
