Peter Navarro, a trade advisor associated with former US President Donald Trump, has become the target of widespread criticism from Indian social media users. The controversy stems from Navarro’s remarks regarding India’s policy of acquiring crude oil from Russia. Navarro accused Indian traders of taking advantage of the situation and profiting from the sales of Russian oil, furthermore, he laid responsibility for the conflict in Ukraine on India.
The tone of disapproval was amplified by a post that showed an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Navarro concluded his message by stating, “The road to peace in Ukraine goes through New Delhi,” which many found offensive and provocative.
A social media user reacted strongly, writing, “You armed Pakistan with free weapons for decades, not through sales. You never sold weapons to India, even when we offered to pay. We see your trap. India will manufacture domestically and rely on trusted partners who support our technology and economy. True partners have strategic foresight, unlike your colonial strategy.”
Another user simply stated, “India will continue to buy Oil from wherever its available.” An additional comment brought in historical context, stating, “Oh so now you have issues with India having relations with Russia same Russia who put nuclear between India and your nuclear submarines in 1971 which you tried to use to threaten India helping Pakistan.”
