A protest organized by ABVP activists outside the Lucknow residence of Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar led to clashes with the police. The demonstration was in response to a police baton charge at the Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial University (SRMU) in Barabanki and the minister’s disputed remarks.
The protesters expressed their grievances against the minister and the government, leading to a tense confrontation with the police. Several activists were detained and taken to Eco Garden after the clash, creating a tense atmosphere.
The initial protest was against the university’s LLB program, which allegedly lacked recognition from the Bar Council of India (BCI). The police used batons, resulting in injuries to many students. Students have accused the police of excessive force and collusion with university officials.
Minister Rajbhar’s alleged comments, backing the police action against the students, exacerbated the situation. ABVP activists responded by demonstrating outside the minister’s residence, setting effigies ablaze, and chanting slogans.
ABVP officials have demanded firm action against those responsible for the incidents at the university, and they have pledged to continue their protest until justice is achieved. As students tried to enter the minister’s residence, the police increased their presence, which led to physical confrontations and arrests.
The incident has drawn criticism from opposition parties, with the Samajwadi Party and NSUI staging protests in support of ABVP. Opposition leaders have called for compensation and proper medical care for the injured students. The Chief Minister has ordered investigations and personnel changes.
ABVP and other student organizations have demanded the Vice Chancellor’s removal, the reinstatement of expelled students, and clarity on the law degree’s recognition status. They have issued a warning of further escalation if their demands are not met.
