Afghanistan has been struck by a second earthquake this week, with a 5.8 magnitude tremor occurring in the southeastern province on Thursday. This comes on the heels of a previous earthquake in the Kunar province. The German research center reported the earthquake’s intensity.
The GFD confirmed that the earthquake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles).
This quake follows a series of earthquakes earlier this week, which caused over 2,200 fatalities and more than 3,600 injuries in the country’s eastern region. The earlier quakes caused significant damage, destroying villages and leaving many people without homes.
A 6-magnitude earthquake, one of the most devastating to hit Afghanistan in recent years, occurred on Sunday in the Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, resulting in widespread destruction.
Approximately 1,400 people have died, and thousands are now homeless, with aid groups warning of dwindling resources. The United Nations and other agencies have emphasized the critical need for food, shelter, and medical supplies.
Before Thursday’s quake, the Kunar province experienced a devastating earthquake, with whole villages destroyed. The United Nations has stated the urgent need for food, shelter, and medical assistance, and the death toll is expected to rise.
In response to the ongoing crises, multiple nations and global organizations are offering support. India has also provided 21 tons of relief supplies to Afghanistan, including food, medicine, and additional aid.
