
The recent heavy rainfall has caused significant distress in multiple Indian states, with Punjab experiencing particularly severe conditions. The state has witnessed 46 fatalities resulting from the floods. Millions of people are affected, with around 2,000 villages under water and 2 lakh hectares of crops destroyed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab in response to the crisis.
PM Modi will be in Punjab on September 9th, touring the flood-affected areas, including Gurdaspur. The visit is viewed with anticipation by the people of Punjab, as a major relief package may be announced during the visit. The Prime Minister may announce economic aid or compensation measures for the flood victims.
Since August 17th, Punjab has been grappling with flood-like conditions. Continuous heavy rainfall has submerged approximately 2,000 villages. The residents of these villages have been evacuated to safer locations. The floods have caused extensive agricultural damage, with over 2 lakh hectares of farmland destroyed. Initial reports indicate that the state has suffered losses surpassing 10,000 crore.
The Punjab government has already declared the state as a disaster zone and has requested 60,000 crore in funds from the central government. During PM Modi’s visit, the announcement of a financial package is highly anticipated.
Several districts of Punjab are affected by the floods. The army is conducting extensive rescue and relief operations. Bollywood actor Salman Khan and other actors have extended their support by adopting villages to help the people affected by the floods.
