A devastating incident unfolded in Khunti district, Jharkhand, where a student lost his life after falling into a well. Suraj Manjhi, a third-grade student at the Rajyikrit Kanya Madhya Vidyalaya, had just finished his mid-day meal when he went to find water. Because the school’s hand pump was out of order, students had to go outside the school to access water. Sadly, Suraj slipped and fell into a well. Despite efforts to rescue him, he could not be saved. The incident has prompted an investigation by the District Education Superintendent, who has also ordered that action be taken against those accountable. The lack of a working hand pump and the necessity for students to seek water elsewhere underscore the school’s inadequate infrastructure. The incident echoes a prior tragedy in June 2025 in the Murhu area, where two children died after falling into a construction well.
