Kulman Ghising has been selected to lead Nepal’s Interim Government. As the former CEO of the electricity board, Ghising is celebrated for his role in resolving the Himalayan nation’s power crisis. He is now likely to be the chosen candidate by the protesting Gen Z to become Nepal’s Prime Minister. This decision was announced two days after KP Sharma Oli resigned from his position, following extensive agitation against his government. Previously, candidates like Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah and former Chief Justice Sushila Karki were considered viable options to lead Nepal’s Interim Government. However, in a virtual meeting that lasted nearly four hours, members of the Gen Z movement decided to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as their interim leader to represent them in upcoming discussions. The selection of Kulman Ghising by the protestors came as a surprise.
Kulman Ghising is widely recognized as a ‘patriot and everyone’s favorite,’ and he is credited with ending years of load shedding in Nepal. Ghising served as the former Electricity Board CEO. He studied electrical engineering at the Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, India, and later earned a master’s degree in power systems engineering from the Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk, Tribhuvan University, in Nepal. In 1994, Ghising’s career progressed steadily. He became the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) in 2016, and he quickly became a household name for ending the 18-hour daily power cuts. After being removed from his post, he was reappointed in 2021.
