The political landscape of Nepal sees a new contender for the interim Prime Minister position: Harka Raj Rai, known as Harka Sampang, the independent mayor of Dharan. He is backed by a faction of Gen-Z protesters. This follows the initial support for Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, and later, retired Chief Justice Sushila Karki, who also had supporters. Sampang’s popularity stems from his decision to forgo VIP treatment. He is known for standing in line with the public rather than using special lounges. He gained recognition after returning from Afghanistan, where he worked as a migrant worker. He worked to address local issues in his hometown. Sampang has criticized Balendra Shah for his perceived inaction during the protests, calling him a “coward.” The Nepal Army also requested a clear candidate for leadership.
