The FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 saw D Gukesh suffer his third consecutive loss, this time at the hands of Ediz Gurel. The match, played in Round 7, saw the 19-year-old Indian Grandmaster fall to the 16-year-old Turkish prodigy. Gukesh had previously lost to Abhimanyu Mishra and Nikolas Theodorou. The game was characterized by complex positions and strategic battles. Although Gurel committed a minor error on move 27, the game’s intensity persisted, with both players trading queens on move 29. Gukesh’s situation worsened after move 40, leading to a critical error. A bishop sacrifice for two pawns proved detrimental, resulting in his loss. The world champion displayed clear disappointment after the game and conceded the match. Gurel was pleased with the win, stating it was a ‘crazy tough game’ and that he enjoyed playing the World Champion.
