India’s vehicle owners have a valuable opportunity to settle their outstanding traffic challans at the National Lok Adalat, which is scheduled for September 13, 2025. This legal forum, set to occur in various courts across the country, aims to address minor traffic violations. These violations include infractions such as driving without essential safety gear, speeding, improper parking, or lacking a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. Those who participate in the Lok Adalat can potentially benefit from reduced fines or even complete waivers, leading to savings in both time and money while circumventing the usual court proceedings. It’s important to understand that serious offenses such as drunk driving, hit-and-run incidents, and cases of negligent driving resulting in fatalities will not be considered within this forum. The goal is to reduce the burden on the judicial system and encourage a higher level of adherence to traffic regulations.
To participate in the Delhi Lok Adalat, designed to resolve pending traffic challans or e-challans, online registration is a must. The process includes going to the Delhi Traffic Police website (traffic.delhipolice.gov.in) and selecting the ‘Delhi State Legal Services Authority’ option. Applicants will then need to provide details like their full name, contact number, vehicle registration number, and information about the specific challan. After submitting the form, a token number and appointment letter are sent via email. These include links for confirmation and token download. Lok Adalat hearings will be held from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Those attending the hearing must bring a printed appointment letter, their token number, and all original documents. These should include vehicle papers and any challan receipts. Authorities suggest arriving at the venue at least one hour before the proceedings begin. The upcoming Lok Adalat covers a variety of minor traffic offenses that may be eligible for waivers or reduced fines. These include not wearing a seat belt or helmet, ignoring traffic signals, speeding, improper parking, driving without a valid PUC, missing number plates, lacking a vehicle fitness certificate, driving in the wrong lane, driving without a valid license, incorrectly issued challans, and other minor violations.
Serious violations will not be eligible for relief under this initiative. These include driving under the influence, hit-and-run cases, deaths resulting from negligent driving, underage driving, illegal racing or speed trials, vehicles related to criminal cases, cases already in court, and challans issued from other states. The Lok Adalat sessions in Delhi will be held at several courts, including Dwarka Court, Tis Hazari Court, Rohini Court, Rouse Avenue Court, Karkardooma Court, Patiala House Court, and Saket Court. Additionally, there will be sessions at the Delhi High Court, District Courts, the Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, the Debt Recovery Tribunal, the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, and Permanent Lok Adalats.
Citizens can expect several key benefits from the Lok Adalat. They can settle minor violations with reduced or waived fines, avoid incurring legal expenses, save time by bypassing long court procedures, and allow the judiciary to concentrate on more complex cases. The aim of this initiative is to promote compliance with traffic laws and to expedite the resolution of minor legal disputes.
