Punjab is currently navigating the aftermath of severe flooding, with a primary focus on relief, sanitation, and reconstruction efforts. The government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has initiated a comprehensive campaign, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the floods. The campaign, running from September 14th to September 23rd, encompasses over 2300 villages and urban wards, aiming to restore normalcy across the affected areas. The focus is on ensuring that every street, neighborhood, and ward is cleaned and restored to its pre-flood condition.
To facilitate this undertaking, municipal corporations, municipal councils, and panchayats have received specific instructions to remove accumulated mud, silt, and waste resulting from the floods.
A significant workforce is deployed for this task, including over 1000 sanitation workers, more than 200 tractor-trailers, 150 JCB machines, and numerous health workers. Nodal officers have been appointed in each district to oversee the work, with officers assigned to each zone to ensure on-site monitoring and efficient task completion. Commissioners in municipal corporations and ADCs in districts are entrusted with the responsibility of addressing all pending complaints.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is personally supervising the entire operation, maintaining continuous contact with officials and assessing the situation. He has emphasized that this is not merely a formal effort, but a genuine endeavor to revitalize the lives of every citizen in Punjab.
Along with sanitation, the government is prioritizing healthcare services. The Health Department is conducting medicine spraying, providing access to clean water, and establishing first-aid camps in the affected regions. Following an advisory issued on September 5th, all ULBs have been directed to promptly implement sanitation measures and take steps to prevent the spread of diseases.
Furthermore, a detailed survey is underway to evaluate the extent of the damage and facilitate compensation. Engineering teams are assessing homes, shops, roads, power infrastructure, and water systems to provide timely financial aid to all affected individuals.
To ensure transparency, the Punjab government has mandated that before-and-after photographs be taken at all work sites. This measure guarantees that all tasks are completed thoroughly and that government assistance reaches every person in need. The comprehensive cleaning and rehabilitation campaign began with considerable enthusiasm across all districts of Punjab on September 14th. Teams from municipal corporations and local administrations have been actively working since early morning, with the sounds of JCB machines and tractor-trailers signifying the commencement of reconstruction efforts. Residents are expressing their appreciation, recognizing the government’s dedication to reaching every corner of the state with such speed and diligence.
