A recent revelation casts a new light on the appointment of Sushila Karki as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. A gaming app was used, along with social media surveys, to facilitate her selection for the role. The decision was based on a mere 7713 votes, and the individuals who cast these votes remain anonymous.
Following KP Sharma Oli’s resignation, Generation Z leaders organized a survey on Discord, which included Sushila Karki, Dharan’s Mayor Harka Sampang, and Mahabir Pun as potential candidates.
The Discord poll garnered a total of 7713 votes. Karki secured 50% of the votes, with 3833 individuals choosing her as their first choice. ‘Random Nepali’ took second place. ‘Random Nepali’ refers to an individual of Nepali nationality. Sagar Dhakal came in third, with more than 1000 votes in his favor.
Harka Sampang, the Mayor of Dharan, secured fourth place, while Mahabir Pun came in fifth. Generation Z representatives utilized the survey results to negotiate with President Ramchandra Poudel. It is understood that Poudel appointed Karki to the interim Prime Minister post at the recommendation of Generation Z.
The survey has raised two critical questions. Discord, a gaming company based in the US, has 200 million users. Who initiated this survey on Discord, and in what capacity?
A second query pertains to the survey participants. Discord maintains user location privacy. Were the voters in Karki’s election exclusively Nepali nationals, and if so, who were they?
Karki is facing opposition in Nepal just three days after her appointment. The opposition is coming from the very people who played a crucial role in her appointment. According to Nepali media, Sudan Gurung and his team have initiated opposition to Karki.
Gurung’s team demonstrated outside the Prime Minister’s residence on Sunday and Monday. They assert that Prime Minister Karki is making arbitrary decisions and have voiced their opposition to Karki’s cabinet expansion plans.
