Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Prakash Man Singh Raut stated on Saturday that the apex court had not issued any order to restrict social media websites. He clarified that the Supreme Court had urged the government to regulate social media websites by enacting the necessary laws, a common international practice. The previous government led by Oli had imposed restrictions on 26 social media sites, citing the Supreme Court’s order, which the Gen-Z group protested on September 8th. The ban on social media sites was lifted on the night of September 8th. The term Gen-Z refers to the generation born between 1997 and 2012. The protests and calls for accountability reflect growing discontent within Nepal’s younger generation concerning governance and perceived corruption.
