The Trump administration is considering exemptions for doctors from the newly implemented $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applications. The proclamation states that exceptions may be granted if the Secretary of Homeland Security determines that employing the workers is crucial for the national interest. This follows concerns from medical organizations about the impact on areas with existing shortages of healthcare providers. The fee, effective from September 21, applies only to new H-1B applications. The USCIS confirmed the fee’s scope and that it would not apply to those who have already filed petitions or hold valid H-1B visas.
