While en route to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, French President Emmanuel Macron’s car was halted by law enforcement. The police action was taken to accommodate the movement of Donald Trump’s motorcade, prompting Macron to step out of his vehicle and speak with traffic police. A video of this encounter has gone viral.
The video captures an officer explaining the road closure to Macron because of Trump’s motorcade. Macron is then seen making a phone call, reportedly to the former US President.
Macron jokingly asked Trump to clear the way.
Shortly after being stopped by the New York Police, Macron called Trump. During the call, he quipped that he was on a New York street waiting for him, due to the traffic restrictions.
Macron subsequently engaged with people on the street, taking photos with some. The New York Police Department has yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
Macron is in New York to participate in the UN General Assembly. He announced the recognition of Palestine on the first day of the meeting. France is a permanent member of the United Nations. This year’s UN meeting is focused on issues such as terrorism, climate change, Palestine, and Syria.
France is being closely watched at the meeting, as it is the first European nation and a permanent UN member to publicly recognize Palestine as a separate state.
