Following a hunger strike led by Sonam Wangchuk, advocating for Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule and full statehood, violence erupted in Ladakh. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a statement on September 25th addressing the situation. The Ministry emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving the issues in Ladakh through ongoing discussions with the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance. The Ministry stated that these dialogues have resulted in several significant decisions.
The Ministry highlighted historical steps taken to benefit Ladakh via the High Powered Committee (HPC) and sub-committees, including increased reservations for Scheduled Tribes, reservation for women in councils, the official recognition of the Bhoti and Purgi languages, and the initiation of a recruitment drive. The statement also noted that while most leaders are pleased with the progress, some elements are working to undermine the dialogue. The government expressed its concern regarding Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike and his alleged inflammatory comments.
