Donald Trump, the former US President, is attempting to bolster his chances of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize this year. A central part of his strategy involves securing a ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza conflict. A crucial meeting is set for September 29th to discuss the ceasefire terms. Once the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, agrees, the proposal will be presented to Hamas.
Trump is aiming to halt the fighting in Gaza by October 1st, as the Nobel Peace Prize announcement is scheduled for October 10th.
Why Gaza Matters to Trump’s Nobel Aspirations
The Gaza conflict, which began in October 2023, has tragically claimed over 65,000 lives. Israel has been criticized by European and Arab nations for the situation, while the United States has consistently supported Israel. French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent remarks indicated that Trump could be awarded the Nobel if he helps end the Gaza war.
This prompted the US presidential office to intensify its peace efforts, including inviting the Israeli Prime Minister to the White House.
Nobel Peace Prize Requirements
The Nobel Peace Prize is given to those who foster cooperation between nations, work towards eliminating or reducing standing armies, and significantly contribute to peace conferences and international diplomacy.
Trump has previously highlighted his efforts in ending several conflicts during his presidency. However, he has yet to resolve the Russia-Ukraine war, despite prior assertions.
Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by nations such as Cambodia and Pakistan. He expressed his interest in the award during a UN speech, suggesting he was carrying out the work of the UN.
