The upcoming Bihar assembly elections are marked by intense political competition and strategic maneuvering by various parties. Bhojpuri star Pawan Singh is at the center of these developments. His recent meeting with RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha in Delhi is a notable event. This interaction might signify Singh’s comeback into the BJP. Singh had earlier contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Karakat constituency, which both he and Kushwaha lost. Kushwaha previously opposed Singh’s re-entry into the NDA. Their recent meeting indicates a potential resolution of these differences.
Singh also held meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President J.P. Nadda. These meetings, lasting around 30 minutes, illustrate Singh’s increasing significance in the political arena.
The increased demand for Pawan Singh is driven by his popularity with the youth. His ability to secure a significant vote share as an independent candidate in the last Lok Sabha elections is evidence of his broad appeal. Singh’s role in the defeat of NDA candidate Upendra Kushwaha during the previous Lok Sabha elections caused tensions within the alliance. Hence, efforts are being made to resolve these issues before the assembly elections.
Singh’s re-entry into the NDA is expected to provide advantages in the Bihar assembly elections, specifically in the Magadh and Shahabad regions. These regions are crucial, with the BJP securing 11 out of 25 seats in the 2020 assembly elections. The BJP projects a potential 3 to 4 percent increase in vote share due to Singh’s star power. Additionally, Singh’s Rajput background could help secure the Rajput vote bank.
Speculation is growing that Singh might contest the assembly elections from Ara. If Singh runs from Ara, it could be beneficial to the BJP and NDA. Singh’s influence extends to nearly two dozen seats in areas such as Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, and Kaimur. As a prominent Bhojpuri actor, Singh is able to attract young voters.
Singh’s re-entry has significantly altered Bihar’s political narrative. The opposition perceives this as a move against Upendra Kushwaha.
The Election Commission of India has published the final voter list, which shows an increase in voters, now totaling 72.4 million. The list includes 2.1 million new voters. Voters can check their names on the Election Commission’s website and add their names to the list up to ten days before the last date for nominations.
