The Indian passenger car market in September 2025 saw a notable shift in rankings. Maruti Suzuki emerged as the leading brand, with Tata Motors securing the second position, ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra. While Maruti Suzuki maintained its lead, a slight decrease in registered units was observed.
Maruti Suzuki’s registrations for September 2025 totaled 1,22,785 units, reflecting a 5.77% decrease compared to the 1,30,242 units registered in August. The company’s strong foothold in the hatchback, SUV, and MPV segments continued to set it apart.
Tata Motors witnessed a significant upswing in performance, with registrations reaching 40,068 units in September, representing a 5.44% increase from the 37,988 units in August. This performance allowed Tata Motors to surpass Mahindra and claim the second position. The growing demand for popular models such as the Nexon and Punch highlighted Tata’s growth trajectory.
Mahindra experienced a substantial setback, with an 11.37% decline in September. Registrations dropped to 37,451 units, compared to 42,253 units in August. Hyundai’s registrations were 35,470 units in September 2025, significantly lower than the 45,686 units in August, which marked a 22.34 percent decrease in sales. Despite its focus on successful SUVs, Hyundai faced substantial market challenges, trailing behind both Tata and Mahindra.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported registrations of 20,051 units in September, a decrease of 24.23 percent from the 26,453 units in August. Despite the popularity of models like Innova Hycross and Fortuner, the company couldn’t sustain its growth. Kia India also saw a drop in performance, registering 16,540 units in September, down from 18,793 units in August.
