Andrew Flintoff is no longer the head coach of the Northern Superchargers, having ended his two-year tenure due to a contract dispute with the franchise’s new owners. The former England star revealed that discussions with the Sun Group, an Indian conglomerate that recently acquired the team, did not result in an agreement that met his expectations.
Flintoff, who was appointed in November 2023, saw the Superchargers achieve consistent progress. The team finished fourth in the league in 2024 and secured a third-place finish this year. Their campaign concluded prematurely when a rain-out in the Eliminator match saw them eliminated by the Trent Rockets, who advanced based on their superior group stage standing.
In a podcast interview, Flintoff explained that the contract offered by the Sun Group undervalued his role, stating he felt he deserved more than a quarter of what other head coaches earn. He emphasized that feeling valued was crucial, and without it, the arrangement wouldn’t work. He conveyed regret over leaving, having enjoyed his time building with the team.
The Superchargers’ management has countered Flintoff’s account, claiming they offered a significant salary increase to keep him and expressed disappointment at his decision to depart. Flintoff, who also coaches the England Lions on their Australian tour, remains uncommitted but not without interest from other clubs.
He confirmed having received several additional coaching offers for The Hundred’s 2026 season but is currently in a relaxed state regarding his next career step, keeping his options open for future coaching endeavors.
