A vibrant revival of traditional Santal religious practices is underway in Baramsia village, Dumka, with the commencement of weekly worship at the ‘Manjhi Thaan’. The initiative, a collaborative effort involving social activist Sachidanand Soren and the village’s traditional leadership, aims to reinforce cultural identity and community spirit. The sacred ‘Manjhi Thaan’ was meticulously cleaned before the community, comprising men, women, and children, gathered for the ‘Bonga Buru’ (worship ceremony). Utilizing traditional elements like incense and offerings, alongside modern ones like sweets, they collectively offered prayers. This revitalized ritual will now be observed every Sunday.
Community members expressed that these weekly gatherings are essential for upholding their spiritual faith and cultural traditions amidst modern challenges. The worship is dedicated to Marang Buru, the supreme deity of the Santal people. The overarching goals are to cultivate community solidarity, nurture spiritual peace, and pass on their rich cultural heritage to the next generation. A key focus is engaging the youth and children, helping them connect with and appreciate their ancestral customs and encouraging them towards positive character development. The ‘Manjhi Thaan Bonga Buru’ is recognized as a significant step towards enhancing social harmony and promoting well-being, prosperity, and mutual respect within the village. Prayers were also included for the moral and educational growth of children, advocating for responsible living and respect for elders. Devotees partook in prasad following the ceremony.
