A looming deadline of November 1st has been set by President Donald Trump, who is threatening to impose potential tariffs of 155% on China unless a trade agreement is reached. This strong warning was tempered by Trump’s surprisingly diplomatic tone towards Beijing, suggesting an openness to further dialogue. He highlighted China’s current contributions, stating they are paying “tremendous amounts of money” to the U.S. in tariffs and have been “very respectful.”
Trump specified that China is already subject to a 55% tariff, which he deemed a considerable financial burden. The possibility of this rate escalating to 155% serves as significant leverage. Despite the tariff ultimatum, the President expressed confidence in achieving a “very fair trade deal” with President Xi, describing the prospective negotiations as potentially “exciting.”
