An alarming incident unfolded at a government hospital in Uluberia, West Bengal, where a woman doctor was allegedly assaulted and subjected to rape threats by the family members of a patient. The attack occurred at the Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital on Monday. Authorities have arrested three individuals – Sheikh Samrat, Sheikh Babulal, and Sheikh Hasibul – in connection with the assault after the doctor filed a complaint.
The incident has brought back painful memories of a similar brutal attack on a doctor in Kolkata last year, intensifying discussions about the security of medical professionals. Medical associations have actively engaged with the situation, expressing deep-seated worries about the welfare of doctors on duty. The political landscape has been significantly impacted, with the opposition BJP launching sharp attacks on the ruling Trinamool Congress. The BJP leadership has cited the Uluberia assault as evidence of deteriorating law and order and inadequate protection for women in the state, questioning the effectiveness of current safety measures and the Chief Minister’s assurances.
While the Trinamool Congress has condemned the violence and emphasized the swift arrests, they have also accused the opposition of politicizing the tragedy. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for enhanced security protocols in healthcare facilities across the region.
