
India is on the cusp of launching its own powerful AI chatbot, Sarvam AI, designed to communicate fluently in Hindi and nine other regional languages. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has projected a launch window of late 2025 to early 2026 for the fully operational system, signaling a strong governmental push for self-sufficiency in AI technology. Vaishnaw’s personal commitment to using Sarvam AI underscores its national importance.
This groundbreaking AI is being developed by a Bangalore-based startup specializing in practical AI solutions. Their prior work includes a voice-enabled software for customer interactions, meticulously trained on data from ten Indian languages. This focus on local languages positions Sarvam AI as a distinct alternative to international platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini, offering unparalleled relevance to Indian users and potential appeal to global audiences with linguistic ties to the subcontinent.
Sarvam AI promises real-time voice interaction capabilities and the automation of mundane chores, representing a significant advancement in India’s generative AI capabilities. The government is actively fostering this collaboration to expedite the development and rollout.
To enhance citizen services, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) joined forces with Sarvam AI earlier this year. This strategic alliance aims to inject generative AI intelligence into Aadhaar services, making them quicker, smarter, and more robust. Sarvam AI will offer instantaneous feedback to individuals undergoing Aadhaar processes and play a vital role in fraud detection by identifying anomalies during authentication and alerting the relevant authorities promptly.
The AI will initially cater to users in Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, and Malayalam. Plans are already in motion to extend this linguistic coverage, further solidifying India’s AI infrastructure.
