Producer Boney Kapoor has shared an intriguing story from the past, detailing his initial negotiations with the mother of the late, iconic actress Sridevi. A clip circulating online shows Kapoor recounting how he cleverly managed Sridevi’s professional fees, laying the groundwork for their eventual marriage and a lasting partnership.
Kapoor revealed that when Sridevi’s mother approached him seeking INR 10 lakh for her daughter’s services, he countered with an offer of INR 11 lakh. This move was strategic, as he wanted his brother to be paired with a prominent actress in the film ‘Joshilaay’. His initial meeting with Sridevi in Mumbai established that her mother would be the primary negotiator for her professional commitments.
During a meeting in Chennai, Kapoor engaged with Sridevi’s mother. Despite the language barrier, Kapoor’s adept communication skills allowed him to decipher her intentions. He understood that her mention of ’10 rupees’ meant a fee of INR 10 lakh. Having researched Sridevi’s fee for her most recent film (INR 8.5 lakh), Kapoor initially contemplated offering INR 9 lakh. However, he decided to raise his offer to INR 11 lakh, surprising her mother. He also readily agreed to pay a higher amount for staff expenses, demonstrating his commitment.
This pattern of strategic negotiation continued. Kapoor arranged for Sridevi to sign ‘Chandni’ for INR 15 lakh, with the involvement of Yash Chopra. For the film ‘Khuda Gawah’, Kapoor proposed a future fee of INR 25 lakh, which was accepted, highlighting his foresight in managing Sridevi’s career trajectory and earning potential.
Sridevi, celebrated as one of India’s greatest actresses, passed away in 2018. Her death in Dubai, caused by accidental drowning compounded by heart failure, was a deeply felt loss by the Indian film industry and millions of fans worldwide.
