A deeply disturbing case has emerged in Maharashtra following the suicide of a woman doctor, who allegedly named a police sub-inspector in a note detailing horrific abuse. The doctor, who worked at the Phaltan sub-district hospital, died Thursday night, leaving behind a message on her palm accusing Inspector Gopal Badne of rape and prolonged torture. The accused officer has been suspended in the wake of these allegations.
According to the chilling note, the doctor was allegedly raped on four separate occasions and endured months of physical and psychological torment. Authorities have confirmed that a case has been registered against Badne and an accomplice under stringent laws pertaining to rape and abetment to suicide. The Satara District Police are actively pursuing the accused and have promised a thorough investigation to bring the culprits to justice.
Compounding the tragedy, it has been revealed that the doctor had previously sought help from the police, lodging a complaint in June against three officers from the Phaltan Rural Police Department for harassment. The alleged lack of adequate action on her earlier complaint has drawn severe criticism from political circles, with accusations leveled against the government of fostering an environment where such crimes can occur unchecked.
The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has acknowledged the severity of the situation and is overseeing the investigation, including why the doctor’s initial complaint was not addressed effectively. An FIR has been filed at the Phaltan City Police Station, and authorities are intensifying their search for the absconding individuals, Gopal Badne and Prashant Bankar.
