The United States is actively seeking to bolster its strategic partnership with Pakistan, with new initiatives including potential investment in a port in Balochistan and growing trade volumes. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has firmly stated that this strengthening of ties with Islamabad will not diminish the US’s unwavering commitment to its strong alliance with India.
Rubio highlighted that while the US and Pakistan have a history of collaboration, particularly in counter-terrorism, the renewed efforts are aimed at expanding cooperation on a broader range of shared priorities. He expressed confidence in India’s diplomatic acumen, noting that New Delhi comprehends the strategic imperative for nations to cultivate relationships across the geopolitical spectrum. This approach, he suggested, reflects a mature and thoughtful foreign policy.
The US official reiterated, “We have worked with Pakistan against terrorism and now aim to expand that cooperation. This will not come at the cost of our strong ties with India or any other nation.” This statement aims to preempt any concerns from India regarding closer US-Pakistan engagement. The proposed port development in Pasni, Balochistan, and a reported 6.3% increase in bilateral trade in 2024 signify a tangible uptick in US interest and potential investment in Pakistan, signaling a multifaceted approach to regional diplomacy.
