The Indian Navy’s fleet has expanded with the addition of INS Ikshak, the third Survey Vessel Large (SVL), commissioned in Kochi. This advanced vessel represents a significant enhancement in the Navy’s capacity for precise hydrographic surveys. INS Ikshak is built to meticulously map deep-sea areas and uncharted maritime zones, aiming to ensure safe passage for all vessels operating in the region. A proud testament to indigenous manufacturing, the ship incorporates roughly 80% Indian-made components by cost and utilizes steel produced entirely within India. This commissioning reinforces the nation’s self-reliance goals in defense production. The vessel’s state-of-the-art equipment allows for comprehensive hydrographic and oceanographic data collection. Furthermore, its design allows for flexible deployment in humanitarian aid and disaster relief scenarios, as well as serving as a medical facility if required. Breaking new ground in inclusivity, INS Ikshak is the first SVL to provide dedicated accommodation for its female crew, signifying a modern and forward-thinking Navy. Its deployment will significantly elevate India’s ability to conduct detailed maritime surveys, protect its interests, and project power effectively.
