The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has issued a strong rebuke to Pakistan, warning against any attempts to use Afghan soil for hostile activities. This declaration follows the unsuccessful conclusion of the latest round of peace talks between the two neighboring countries. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan affirmed its unwavering resolve to defend its territory and populace, making it clear that no country will be permitted to undermine its security or sovereignty. The Taliban’s official spokesman reiterated the government’s consistent policy: Afghan land will not be utilized for operations against any other nation. The statement emphasized that the defense of Afghanistan is a sacred duty and that the country will resolutely resist any aggression. This development comes amidst accusations from Kabul that specific elements within Pakistan’s military are actively working to destabilize Afghanistan, allegedly creating ‘manufactured pretexts’ to sow discord and viewing Afghanistan’s stability as a threat. Relations have become increasingly fraught, marked by recent fatal border clashes. While the Taliban thanked mediators Turkey and Qatar, they also expressed dissatisfaction with Pakistan’s ‘irresponsible and non-cooperative’ stance, which they claim derailed the dialogue. Crucially, the Taliban forcefully rejected Pakistan’s narrative blaming them for the resurgence of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), dismissing these assertions as ‘false and baseless.’ They argued that the TTP problem predates their return to power and is fundamentally an internal Pakistani concern. Kabul also pointed to its efforts in promoting regional stability, including diplomatic outreach, refugee resettlement near the Durand Line, and strict controls on weaponry within refugee settlements. The current tense atmosphere signals the fragility of regional peace and the significant hurdles to preventing further conflict.
